There is no career long enough to avoid the September hurdle. Returning from vacation always seems to mark a turning point and a new beginning. Compared to the past, however, office anxiety and the so-called post vacation blues resolve more quickly: the perception of feeling disoriented after the holidays is reported by one in five psychologists and is a brief phase. 65.6% say that a new balance is reached in a short time.

The increase in requests for psychological support
The company offering online psychological services UnoBravo, which relies on a network of 9,500 professionals, notes that about 70% of the psychologists it collaborates with see a significant increase in requests to start a psychological path in September. At the same time, however, one in three professionals observes a dropout after a few sessions by new patients.

The reasons
Although for many it is the topic that drains the most energy in September, work is not the first reason driving people to undertake a support path after returning from vacation. Psychologists indicate other priorities underlying the new paths. First of all, there are affective and personal relationships indicated by 31%, followed by life transitions (24.4%). Returning to work ranks only third (17.3%).
Psychological support does not take a holiday
Holidays increasingly coincide less with a break from psychological paths. Over a third (35.5%) of psychologists say that long-term patients, that is, those who have been in a psychological support path for more than 6 months, expressly ask to continue sessions even during the summer period. More than 1 in 2 patients needs to maintain a consolidated routine and continuity in the therapeutic alliance, seen as a “safe space” to protect even on vacation. More and more patients “ask not to interrupt sessions in summer. For some, the session can become a point of reference even in a period that, although associated with rest, still involves changes in routine and less predictability,” explains Corena Pezzella, psychotherapist and Clinical Manager of Unobravo. The summer break for those in a consolidated path does not discourage continuing it: about 92% of psychologists report that interruptions of already started paths concern only a minimal part of patients and in at least one case out of four the interruption represents a completely physiological step coinciding with the conclusion of the path.
