To understand the transformations in the labor market, the only option is to ask workers and companies how they are experiencing them. Thus, Federchimica and Farmindustria shared with the unions (Filctem, Femca, and Uiltec) the project to launch a social analysis that will be carried out by the University of Milan. The goal is to increase the sector’s attractiveness to talent, manage the needs of an evolving workforce, and address the advent of new technologies. “Supporting the competitiveness of our companies means being able to anticipate the phenomena and changes that affect society and, inevitably, the world of work and the company population. To effectively perform the role of social partners and continue to be attractive without losing talent, the path is listening and engaging in dialogue about the expectations of workers and companies,” says Federchimica president Francesco Buzzella. The demand for skills and organizational methods in the world of work “are changing rapidly, as are values and expectations, especially from the new generations,” reflects Farmindustria president Marcello Cattani. “The pharmaceutical industry thrives on innovation and research and is sensitive to these changes because adaptability speed and excellent human resources represent the main competitiveness assets.” The sector’s industrial relations model is inspired by “dialogue, participation, and the ability to evolve together, making the contract not only a regulatory tool but a strategic lever for the sector’s future.”

The survey project was born precisely within the framework of industrial relations and has no precedents at the sector level. It will be carried out by directly involving companies and workers who will be given two specific questionnaires, developed with the Department of Economics, Management and Quantitative Methods (DEMM) of the University of Milan. The characteristics of the company population will be analyzed, as well as the values and expectations of companies and workers, the impact of artificial intelligence, issues of representation and participation, also examining generational differences and various dimensions of diversity. The survey results will then become the starting point for the General States of Industrial Relations of the sector, which will take place in the spring of 2027. The event will be a moment of analysis and discussion on the main challenges of the coming years: digital transition, artificial intelligence, new organizational models, demographics and skills, in a context of geopolitical scenarios that also impact the world of work. The goal of companies and unions is to strengthen the understanding of these phenomena to support the central role of the company and industrial relations in the progress of society, thus responding to the needs for collective growth and well-being.
