Istat: GDP grows by 0.2% in the second quarter

In the second quarter of 2026, it is estimated that the gross domestic product (GDP), expressed in chained values with the reference year 2020, adjusted for calendar effects and seasonally adjusted, grew by 0.2% compared to the previous quarter and by 1% in year-on-year terms. This is reported by Istat.

The second quarter of 2026, specifies Istat releasing the preliminary GDP estimate, had the same number of working days as the previous quarter and one more working day than the second quarter of 2025. The quarter-on-quarter change is the result of an increase in value added in the services sector and a decrease in agriculture and industry. On the demand side, there is a positive contribution from the national component gross of inventories and a negative contribution from the net foreign component.

“Based on information available at 30 days – comments the Statistical Institute – it is estimated that in the second quarter of 2026 the Italian economy showed a slight quarter-on-quarter slowdown compared to the previous quarter. In year-on-year terms, growth of 1% was recorded, slightly accelerating compared to 0.8% in the previous quarter. The positive quarter-on-quarter dynamic observed in the second quarter results in an upward revision of two tenths of the growth acquired for the year 2026, from 0.6 to 0.8.” “On the supply side – continues Istat – quarter-on-quarter growth is driven by the tertiary sector, while declines are recorded for the value added of agriculture and industry. On the demand side, a negative contribution from the net foreign component is noted, which is associated with a more marked positive contribution from domestic demand gross of inventories.”
