Apuania is a municipality created during fascism; it united Massa, Carrara, and Montignoso and existed from 1938 to 1946. This name reappeared during the renewal of Anna Maria Tonazzini’s identity card, who now lives on the island of Vulcano, and who had gone to Lipari to obtain the new document. There she discovered that her place of birth was no longer Carrara but, indeed, Apuania.

The news was reported by Il Tirreno, to whom the woman recounted the bureaucratic difficulties and concerns of her case.
How to act in case of an error
“First of all, I would go to the Municipality,” says Tonino Morina, tax expert and specialist from Il Sole 24 Ore. The starting point is the registry office: you need to have them explain which information has changed, why, and based on which documents.

“It is essential that it be corrected,” Morina emphasizes. In the case of Apuania, however, the name of the disappeared municipality may actually be the correct one. Tonazzini was born in 1944, when that territory still had the fascist denomination. The place of birth remains linked to the administrative geography of that time, regardless of subsequent changes: a principle reiterated by the government in a 2022 response to the Chamber.
A correction of this type “can be reported directly by the citizen or on the initiative of the Municipality,” explains Morina. For material errors in the registry card, the online correction service of the National Registry is also active, which allows you to request the municipality to correct inaccurate or incomplete data.
