The trend of recent years is confirmed: in over 6 thousand kilometers of coastline, excellent and swimmable waters are recorded. Specifically, out of a total of 6,242 kilometers of coastline monitored in Italy, 5,926 (equal to 94.9%) are classified as excellent quality, the highest provided for by European derived legislation. This scenario is outlined by the analyses conducted over the last four years by Ispra and the National System for Environmental Protection which, during 2025, carried out approximately 30 thousand samplings and monitored approximately 5 thousand points between sea, lakes and rivers, ensuring constant control of water quality.

Percentages close to 100%
According to the results presented by Ispra, the National System for Environmental Protection and Marevivo, all regions show very high percentages of coastline with excellent quality, with peaks close to 100%. Differences in values close to or above 90% are also attributable to the territorial characteristics of each region and the pressure exerted by coastal hydrographic basins.
Only 0.1% unclassified
In this context, only 207 kilometers (equal to 3.3% of the monitored coastline) are classified as good quality, 60 kilometers (equal to 1% of the monitored coastline) are of just sufficient quality, and finally 41 kilometers (0.7%) are classified as poor quality, the lowest provided for by the European classification system. To these must be added 8 unclassified kilometers (0.1%), not yet having reached a sufficient data set.

Positive data that, as highlighted by Snpa, should not be seen as an arrival point but a starting point, since «biodiversity, habitats, seabed quality, microplastics, and climate change are equally strategic aspects to monitor and protect for the future».
