Ex Ilva: appeal to the Court of Cassation coming, collective layoffs in the supply chain

The supply chain of the former Ilva in Taranto is preparing for collective layoffs. The initiative had been hinted at days ago and was confirmed yesterday in the meeting of the associations Confindustria Taranto, Confapi Taranto, Aigi, Confartigianato Taranto, and Federmanager within the framework of the “Permanent Table” established following the decree of the Milan Court of Appeal. The latter ordered the shutdown of the hot area within 90 days (now reduced to less than 80) because it pollutes due to the presence of asbestos in the blast furnaces and the emission of fine dust. The companies “emphasized the seriousness of an unprecedented crisis. The feeling has matured – it is claimed – that the effects caused by the end of the hot area’s operation will not remain confined to the Taranto territory. On the contrary, the most likely hypothesis is that they will soon expand and affect a large part of the country.” And even if “the representatives of the associations are still awaiting the outcomes of the meetings currently being held by the technicians of Mimit and the commissioners of AdI and former Ilva, the common orientation that emerged – it is stated – is that there is no more time to lose. Consequently, it was decided to continue the state of mobilization of all the companies in the supply chain and to proceed with the request for collective dismissal, a necessary measure since the closure of the hot area will inevitably lead to a direct surplus of all the personnel in the supply chain engaged in that area and subsequently of another part of the resources employed in the cold area. This area, due to the lack of steel supply, will be the next to stop.” “Strong initiatives – say the business associations – but they may not be isolated, especially if no news arrives in these hours capable of marking a viable and suitable path to guarantee the health-work connection.”

Meanwhile, the lawyers of Acciaierie d’Italia are working to prepare the appeal to the Court of Cassation against the decree of the Court of Appeal. The appeal could be filed by the end of the month and is based on the illegitimacy of the Court’s decision. The timing within which the Supreme Court could rule is not predictable at the moment. The appeal, however, does not block the enforceability of the decree, so much so that the lawyers will also submit a request for suspension to the Court of Appeal. Finally, in the former Ilva, preparatory activities for the shutdown have begun. Activities that do not yet have visible effects, which will instead be felt at the beginning of September and then reach their peak by the end of October.
