Who is Abdul B., the suspect for the Berlin attack

German police are still searching for the attacker who last night drove a van into the crowd at Berlin Pride, killing one person and injuring at least 16 others. According to initial hypotheses from investigators, the main suspect is Abdul B., a 21-year-old still at large.

The alert issued by the police describes a 21-year-old man, about one meter ninety tall, slender build, black hair, and who, in the images published by the authorities, is wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and white trousers. Born in Berlin in 2005, Abdul B. is a German citizen of Lebanese origin. According to the Dpa news agency, his family lives in Berlin, and the police searched an apartment in the Schöneberg district, but the suspect was not found there. He is reportedly still armed and dangerous; German authorities recommend not approaching him if sighted and to call the emergency number.

Abdul was already known to authorities for crimes such as aggravated assault and extortion, for which he was held in a juvenile prison until last May, and for being a supporter of the Islamic State, long suspected of being part of an Islamist network in the German capital. The Bild newspaper also reports that German authorities have extended their manhunt to neighboring countries, alerting the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Poland, and Denmark.

Last May, Abdul was released from a juvenile prison where he had been detained. In the Pride attack, it is unclear whether he acted alone and whether he was driving the van used, which police say is a private vehicle and not rented. According to the police, the suspect is no longer in the area.
