A record figure, which however reflects only a part of the real impact of the conflict that broke out in 2023. The reconstruction of the social fabric will require generations, especially considering that the level of human development – in less than three years – is estimated to have been set back by 77 years.
This is the alarm raised by Oxfam, as part of the campaign “Palestine, all rights reserved” with a new report, produced in collaboration with the Palestine Economic Policy Research Institute (Mas) and the Palestine Trade Centre (PalTrade).

Palestinians at the helm, beyond charity
The proposal for the reconstruction of Gaza that is presented starts from a key premise: the Palestinian people must be at the helm of the rebirth, one cannot rely on charity.
«Any Plan for the reconstruction of Gaza is destined to fail, regardless of the amount that will be allocated, if it is imposed from above, without the involvement of local institutions, civil society, and economic actors. It will also be necessary to start from the recognition of Israel’s responsibilities, imposing a genuine reversal of course in the international arena», explains Paolo Pezzati, spokesperson for humanitarian crises at Oxfam Italia.
