Indeed, Rubio’s words were enough to unleash the reactions of the Chinese Government, which responded sharply through the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mao Ning. «The erroneous observations made by the US side distort historical facts – she said –, defame China’s political system and development path, and constitute interference in the country’s internal affairs». «China – concluded the spokesperson – is strongly dissatisfied with this».
The Chinese government has never acknowledged the events surrounding the Tiananmen massacre and prohibits all forms of commemoration.
