(Il Sole 24 Ore Radiocor) – Carlo Comporti, the Consob commissioner expert in European regulatory processes, is set to lead Esma, the European Securities and Markets Authority. A commissioner of the Italian Authority since February 2022, Comporti, born in Siena 60 years ago, graduated in Economic and Banking Sciences in his hometown in 1991 and began his career at Consob as an official in 1994.

European experiences
In 2001 he was seconded to the European Central Bank in Frankfurt, and in 2002 to the European Commission in Brussels. From 2003 to 2010 he worked at the Committee of European Securities Regulators (Cesr, precursor to Esma) in Paris, serving as Secretary General and, previously, as Deputy Secretary General.
Roles in the private sector
Comporti has also held roles in the private sector. In particular, he was CEO of Promontory Italia and COO of Promontory Europe (an IBM Consulting Business Unit). In 2011, he served as interim Secretary General and Senior Advisor to the Esma chairman. His curriculum also includes experience as a university lecturer: from 1999 to 2007 he was an adjunct professor for the annual course in commercial law at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Siena.

Giorgetti: «today’s vote is recognition for Italy»
«Even if the process is not yet concluded, today’s decisive vote is a recognition of the person and of Italy», stated Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti, referring to the vote in the European Council on the presidency of the body and adding that «Esma plays a strategic role and in the future is destined to develop as a European Consob. I am satisfied with today’s result, which is the fruit of the working method we have adopted since the beginning of this legislature and confirms the renewed credibility of our country and government in Europe».
The EU Council, during the meeting of the ambassadors of the 27, chose Comporti as a candidate for the presidency of Esma. The choice of the senior Italian official prevailed over the Danish candidate Karen Dortea Abelskov, but it does not constitute a definitive green light for the appointment. It must be confirmed by the European Parliament.
