Since the 1970s, Fontana worked on researching an essential compositional style, based on color fields, transforming nature and landscape into abstract forms and almost geometric figures. With the monograph Skyline (1978), his art was internationally recognized. In 1999, for Craf and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, he taught photography to elementary school children in New York. He collaborated, among others, with the Centre Georges Pompidou, with the Ministries of Culture of France and Japan, and in 2006 he received an honorary degree in design from the Polytechnic University of Turin.
