It is called Cervino The One, acronym for “Our New Elevation”. It is a construction site in Breuil-Cervinia, but above all an order worth about 200 million euros that will redesign alpine mobility and is one of the highest investments in the Italian cable car sector. The work redesigns the connection between the village of Cervinia with Plan Maison and Plateau Rosa. And it will be complementary to the new system on the Swiss side, that of Zermatt. Once completed, the Alpine Crossing will be passable not only with skis on feet. That is, the possibility to reach the resort of Zermatt also for non-skiing tourists.

The start of the work coincides with an anniversary: the 90 years of the first lift inaugurated in 1936 thanks to the entrepreneurial vision of Aldo and Dino Lora Totino, together with other Piedmontese entrepreneurs and the Aosta Valley Luigi Bich. From that first cable car was born one of the most famous ski resorts in the world. Which boasts a predominantly international clientele, equal to 85% of the total. Whose origin is Scandinavian, English, American and Asian.
The construction of the system is entrusted to a temporary association of companies led by Leitner, a South Tyrolean company leader in the cable car sector, supported by local companies active in civil works and infrastructure (Ivies, Cogeis and IGF).

Mauro Joyeusaz, engineer, technical manager of Cervino Spa, explains its technical features: «Two distinct but connected systems. One from Breuil to Plan Maison, the other from Plan Maison to Plateau Rosa. The 3S system consists of three ropes: two carrying ropes, which act as rails, and one hauling rope. It is 6 kilometers long (1,850 meters on the first section and over 4,000 meters on the second), almost 1,500 meters of altitude difference, an operating speed of 8 meters per second (about 29 kilometers per hour)». The travel time is record-breaking: «Less than 17 minutes (4 and a half minutes to reach Plan Maison and about 12 minutes from Plan Maison to the Plateau). With 3,000 passengers per hour».
A complex construction site from an environmental, weather and logistical point of view. «The highest station reaches over 3,400 meters altitude» explains engineer Giorgio Pilotti, commercial director Italy of Leitner. «One of the peculiarities of the 3S system is the high wind resistance. It is a technology that adapts well to extreme weather, as well as ensuring fast transport speed».
