A 25 million euro masterplan for interventions on the Genoese coast, aimed at making free beaches accessible, carrying out sand replenishment, and restoring breakwaters; the Municipality of Genoa is preparing it with the aim of intervening structurally, putting an end to occasional interventions and proceeding, instead, with a well-defined plan. «The situation of the coast and the sea defenses of the territory – said the Councilor for Public Works, Massimo Ferrante – is very complex, as we have already highlighted to the Liguria Region, the competent body for issuing authorizations for structural interventions. It is necessary to overcome the logic of spot interventions and, for this reason, we are working on preparing a comprehensive masterplan of structural interventions, with related funding, which to date do not appear to have been allocated, and we will then be happy to implement the works».

The structural interventions on the coast, according to the estimates of the Municipality’s Hydraulic Works department, amount, as mentioned, to approximately 25 million euros, to be financed, largely, with resources from the Region; they concern, among others, Voltri beach (1.6 million euros – already designed and financed intervention – plus another 3 million euros estimated for the western stretch); Piazzale Kennedy lido (breakwater restoration, estimated intervention of 2.5 million euros); Corso Italia beach (with breakwater reprofiling and more: estimated intervention of 3 million euros); Sturla East and West beach (rearrangement, reorganization and regeneration interventions of the coastline, of 1.8 million euros); ‘tiro al piccione’ breakwater (completion of 800 thousand euros, necessary after the increases in material costs, for a total investment of 1.5 million euros); Quinto Murcarolo beach (2.5 million euros for road defense, with difficulties highlighted in material transport and placement), Garibaldi promenade near Marinella (definitive project for a new submerged breakwater of 1.7 million euros), Garibaldi promenade near Hotel Pagoda (new emerged breakwater of 800 thousand euros), Nervi Falesia Capolungo (1.3 million for the arrangement of the intermediate and upper landslide part).

As for the seasonal sand replenishment and reprofiling interventions, Ferrante explained, «all those identified as priority and necessary have started on schedule and within the established periods». The seasonal sand replenishment and reprofiling interventions are underway, he said, and partly already completed (as regards Boccadasse and Sturla), for a total financial commitment of 282 thousand euros on the 30 municipal beaches, from Vesima to Capolungo.
