
Fiber runs under cities, crosses suburbs, touches countryside and protected areas. But knowing where the network passes today also means understanding its relationship with the territory. This is the origin of Fibercop’s first biodiversity assessment, carried out with the scientific support of Invento Innovation Lab and published on the occasion of World Environment Day.

The study cross-references the group’s digital infrastructure on a national scale – approximately 10,000 exchanges, over 200,000 cabinets, and millions of network elements – with the main environmental protection areas, starting from Natura 2000 sites. The result is a map of coexistence: the telecommunications network is predominantly located in urbanized contexts, but often found near sensitive ecosystems and areas of high naturalistic value.
The point is not just reputational. For an infrastructure essential to the country’s digital development, understanding its interaction with soil, flora, and fauna becomes a lever for industrial planning. It serves to reduce impacts, guide interventions, strengthen resilience to environmental risks, and improve dialogue with institutions and territories.

Telecommunications, compared to other infrastructures, generally have more contained impacts on biodiversity. But the very capillarity of the network demands a qualitative leap in management: it’s not enough to bring connectivity, it must be done by better measuring where and how the infrastructure fits into natural balances. For Fibercop, the assessment thus becomes the first step in a strategy that tries to bring together two capitals of the country: the digital and the environmental.
