Fuel prices are rising again. According to data from the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy collected by the Fuel Price Observatory, today, Saturday, September 5, 2026, the average price in ‘self service’ mode along the national road network is 2.052 euros per liter for gasoline (2.046 euros yesterday) and 2.164 euros per liter for diesel (2.157 euros yesterday). On the highway network, the average self price is 2.138 euros for gasoline and 2.237 euros for diesel. Exactly one month ago, on August 5, prices on the road network were 1.997 euros per liter for gasoline and 2.097 euros per liter for diesel. The increase was therefore 5.5 cents per liter for gasoline and 6.7 cents per liter for diesel.

“From September 1 to today, in just 4 days, a 50-liter fill-up of diesel on the highway costs 1.65 euros more, and one of gasoline 1.70 euros. On the road network, the jump is 1.70 for diesel and 1.50 for gasoline,” denounces Massimiliano Dona, president of the National Consumers Union, commenting on the Mimit averages. “The Government continues to extend a discount on diesel excise duties that is half of what is needed, while it has done nothing on gasoline for 2 months, since July 4, washing its hands. Even worse is the fact that in 1,414 days it has never implemented any measures to stop speculation. The structural measures the Government now talks about are just a joke to allocate less money, reducing excise duties, not to everyone, but only to a few categories of Italians, perhaps shifting the cost onto businesses as with commuter bonuses, but they do not prevent oil companies from making million-euro extra profits,” Dona continues. “For years we have been asking to do serious things, at every annual competition law, but politics does nothing,” Dona concludes.
