Ukraine, Kiev launches 620 drones against Moscow. At least 10 dead in Russian attack on Kharkiv

The exchange of drone attacks between Kyiv and Moscow continues unabated. In Ukraine, two people, a 43-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman, were killed in a drone attack attributed to Russia that occurred on the evening of August 17 in the Zaporizhzhia region: this was reported on Telegram by the head of the local military administration Ivan Fedorov. The same source, during the evening, warned of numerous threats of drone and guided aerial bomb attacks in this area of Ukraine. Furthermore, in the Kharkiv region, a Russian missile attack killed at least 10 people, according to local media. Another eight people were injured, and the attack also damaged private homes, a bar, a post office, a shop, and at least seven cars.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke about the Russian missile attack. “This morning, the Russians launched a brutal attack on a very busy intersection in Pechenihy, in the Kharkiv region, a place where there is a post office and some shops, surrounded exclusively by residential buildings. So far, it has been reported that 10 people have been killed. I express my condolences to their families and loved ones. Many people have been injured and are receiving all necessary medical care.” Zelensky then added: “We will definitely respond to this Russian attack. And it is equally important that our partners complement our legitimate military responses with their own actions, exerting pressure on Russia and supporting Ukraine.”

Between Monday evening and 5:00 a.m. Tuesday (Moscow time), 620 drones were launched towards Moscow and the Moscow region, and 180 were destroyed in the capital region. “Emergency services are working at the sites where debris fell,” said Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin on his official Max channel. Previously, the largest drone attack attempt occurred between the evening of August 15 and 6:30 a.m. on August 16 (Moscow time). According to the mayor – as also reported by the Tass agency – 600 drones headed towards the capital, and 201 were destroyed in the Moscow region. Sobyanin also reported that between the evening of July 6 and 6:00 a.m. on July 7 (Moscow time), air defense forces shot down more than 430 drones, of which 36 were approaching Moscow. The attempted drone attack on Moscow was the largest in the last two years, according to Tass calculations based on data released by the Moscow mayor himself.

In this context, Russia has warned the United Kingdom that it will “pay” for British-made drones supplied to Ukraine and used in attacks deep inside Russian territory, according to press reports. In a statement, the Russian embassy in London accused the country of becoming a “complicit and co-author” of the attacks and of “deliberately opting for escalation” in the conflict. “The deeper its involvement in the conflict and the greater its support for Kyiv’s terrorist machine, the higher the price it will pay,” the statement reads. According to the reconstruction published by the British newspaper Sunday Times, one of the companies involved in manufacturing the drones in question is a subsidiary of the defense giant Bae Systems. The United Kingdom has been one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters since Russia launched its large-scale invasion in February 2022, allocating nearly 30 billion euros in aid, mostly military in nature. In recent months, Kyiv has intensified long-range attacks inside Russia, while Moscow has in turn strengthened missile and drone attacks against the Ukrainian capital.
