Francesco Guccini has died

This morning in Pavana, surrounded by the affection of his wife Raffaella, daughter Teresa, and family members, Francesco Guccini passed away at the age of 86. The family announced this, emphasizing that “in respect of his wishes, the funeral will take place in the coming days and in a strictly private form.” The family, “asking that this moment of grief be experienced in the closest intimacy, thanks all those who will join in his mourning with affection, discretion, and respect. To allow those who loved him to remember and say goodbye, a commemorative ceremony will be organized in September.”

Born on June 14, 1940, in Modena, Francesco Guccini spent most of his childhood in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. He was a teacher for a lifetime but also a young reporter at the Gazzetta di Modena and an advertiser. He entered the music world reluctantly, first as a songwriter for Caterina Caselli and especially for the Beat groups, Equipe 84 and Nomadi, who brought success to “Auschwitz,” “Per fare un uomo,” “Dio è morto,” “Noi non ci saremo.” From the 1970s, he moved to Bologna and became one of the most beloved and listened-to figures of the commitment season, the singer-songwriter with the parka; in his concerts, music and songs mixed with monologues and accents of the best cabaret. Many of his songs have become collective anthems: “La locomotiva,” “Piccola città,” “Il vecchio e il bambino,” “Vedi cara,” “Incontro,” “Autogrill,” “Canzone per un amica,” “Cirano,” “L’avvelenata.” There are many cultural references in his music and writing, ranging from Italian poetry to Borges, from Dylan and Beat poetics to the Bible and Procopius of Caesarea, from Cervantes to Dumas to Barthes. In 2012, after publishing “L’ultima Thule,” Guccini announced his retirement from the active music scene: no more records and concerts to dedicate himself to writing. In 2020, he was shortlisted for the Campiello Prize with his ballad ’Tralummescuro’ (Giunti).
